Why the UAE banned Guy Fawk’s masks

You might know the ‘Guy Fawk’s mask’ from the movie ‘V For Vendetta’, or from it’s adoption by the infamous online hacking group ‘Anonymous’. This mask has been banned by the UAE government and been made illegal to wear.

The V for Vendetta movie has a superhero wearing the Guy Fawk’s mask, in which he uses it to hide his identity while taking down a government and freeing it’s people from injustice and tyranny. A famous phrase from the movie said by the superhero after being asked why he wouldn’t die: “Beneath this mask there is more than just flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea… and ideas are bulletproof.”

The movie has popularized the mask leasing the infamous hacking group Anonymous to adopt it, considering the group, similar to the superhero in the movie, is somehow anarchismic. “Anarchism is an anti-authoritarian political philosophy that advocates self-governed societies based on voluntary, cooperative institutions and the rejection of hierarchies those societies view as unjust.”, Wikipedia.

Similar to the steps taken by the fictional government in the movie, the UAE government has also banned the use of this mask, and have arrested many people who have been caught wearing it in public. The UAE, being an Absolute monarchy, although hasn’t reached the point of being totally hated by it’s society, probably considers Anarchism as one of it’s worst fears, as it easily qualifies as a target for Anarchists.
