UAE punished for fan misconduct vs Qatar

The United Arab Emirates has been punished by the Asian Football Confederation for fan misconduct at the 2019 Asian Cup Semi-Final that happened in Abu Dhabi’s Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium vs Qatar on the 29th of January, 2019.

UAE was the Asian Cup’s host, and the Qatari team had no fans in the stadium due to a political blockade against Qatar by Gulf countries. The political tension between the two countries was probably the fuel that fired up the UAE fans, it was more than just a soccer game.

The UAE’s punishment is a fine of 150,000$ and being forced to play its first home qualifier for the 2023 Asian Cup in an empty stadium.

The AFC stated that the misconduct included: making insulting sounds during Qatar’s national anthem, throwing shoes at Qatari players after the second goal, getting in a fight among themselves and running into the field.
